Harmonic Mixing Explained By Digital DJ Tips (Video)

Harmonic mixing explained

Key Detection for harmonic mixing was recently added to DEX 3 DJ software.

A modified version of the Camelot Scale Key and the Musical Key is automatically analyzed and displayed in both the decks and in the browser (“detect musical key” needs to be enabled in DEX 3’s options, under the general tab) upon loading a track to the deck, or during a batch analyzation of your track library. (How to scan for Key in DEX 3)

Both the Musical Key and modified Camelot Scale Key are display within the DEX 3 browser, to the far right side within the track tag data blocks. You can also search by key in DEX 3 using the method explained in this tutorial video.

But what is harmonic mixing and what’s the benefit when DJing?

DigitalDJTips.com does an excellent job breaking it down for you in the video below. For DJs or VDJs not familiar with key mixing/harmonic mixing this is a must watch. Phil from DigitalDJTips.com explains what key detection and harmonic mixing are, and how mixing in key can benefit your DJ set.

Here’s a tip for you Phil:
In PCDJ Dex like any other DJ software you can alter the tempo (speed) independently of the key (tone), most common: Key Lock.
But here is what sets PCDJ Dex apart from all other DJ software:
you can alter the key (tone) of a playing song, independently of the tempo (speed)
One is no longer prisoner of a fixed key to make harmonic mixing, just alter the key. that of course requires some music knowledge, or a not-tone-deaf DJ
I have not yet been able to find a DJ software that can do this, except PCDJ Dex
