Using iTunes Smart Playlists In DJ Software
DigitalDJTips.com recently posted an article “8 iTunes Smart Playlists You Should Be Using“. It’s a great series of tips on how to best utilize iTunes Smart Playlists for DJ software.
All three DEX 3 products (DEX 3, DEX 3 RE and the Free DJ software DEX 3 LE) have dynamic support for iTunes playlists. Simply turn on library sharing in iTunes and DEX 3 will pick them up automatically on startup, displaying the playlists under the iTunes tab on the navigation pane on the left side of the DEX 3 browser.
Creating playlists directly in DEX 3 is easy enough, and doing so has it’s own merits (no reliance on a third-party application, and potential updates that could ‘break’ integration – albeit an uncommon occurrence) — but the Smart Playlist features in iTunes can greatly simplify the process with automation.
As DigitalDJTips.com explains it:
“Smart Playlists are a great feature of iTunes. Whereas a normal playlist is “manual” – you add tunes to it yourself – a Smart Playlist can be set to automatically update itself with tunes that fit one or more rules you choose. So as you add new tunes to your collection, your Smart Playlists update accordingly. You can play from them inside your DJ software, or use them to help you explore your collection in iTunes itself.”
They further define how Smart Playlists can be utilized for DJ software through 8 tips. It’s a great read for any DEX 3 DJ software user.
