PCDJ DEX 3 Review – DJ, Video & Karaoke Software Combined
Adam Lawson has worked in the DJ business for close to 20 years. He recently posted this short but sweet DEX 3 review and we felt compelled to share. Feedback like this is always passed around our offices, and further strengthens our pride and drive for what we enjoy doing most – designing some of the best and most versatile DJ software on the market, as we have since 1998!
My PCDJ DEX 3 Review: The latest and most versatile DJ software available on the market
When purchasing DJ mixing software, there are many choices available to you as a DJ. PCDJ isn’t always mentioned as much as a couple well-known products, but when comparing against other solutions the features exceed them all. In my book they are one of the best, and they’ve been doing it since 1998. They were the first company to recognize how computers would change the face of the DJ industry. PCDJ DEX 3 is their latest all-in-oe DJ / Video / Karaoke software.
This Pro DJ Software for MAC and Windows allows for total control of all your media files – music videos and audio tracks, even karaoke files. The video mixing section offers three video preview displays for left, right and live…with a quality collection of select-able video transition effects. The intuitive user-interface is easy to navigate even with the many new features it offers because they are right where you expect them to be.
The currently included audio effects are echo, reverb, flanger & beatwaw (a tremolo effect). They all have two parameters that changed depending on the effect selected, and a wet dry mix. You can tell right away that the effects and the hi/low pass filters are professional grade, and integrate with supported DJ Controllers seamlessly.
The DEX 3 browser, in my opinion, is by far the easiest to use out there. iTunes integration is seamless (if you store your iTunes playlists in the default location DEX 3 will just pick them up dynamically!), and imports your play lists straight from iTunes the first time you open up the software. Or you can add music from a folder on your hard drive by setting up folders as favorites too, which is basically a one-click operation.
The other thing PCDJ got right is the “Search”. Two list panes are side-by-side and easily sorted. The search results in the main browser pane can be sent to the sidelist/automix list (with beat matching auto play option) on the right by drag-and-drop or by simply double-clicking a track with your mouse. When sending a karaoke track to the sidelist DEX 3 will prompt you for a singer name (like the PCDJ Karaoki karaoke-only software) to keep your singers ready and organized while hosting. Plus, DEX 3 has built-in hardware recognition for plug-and-play use with 65 different popular DJ controllers from manufacturers such as Numark, Pioneer, Denon DJ and American Audio. There’s a “Midi-Learn” feature for mapping controllers that don’t already have plug and play support.
PCDJ DEX 3 is a brand new release for PCDJ, only 3 weeks new. Since it’s only the first release expect many new features and improvements over the next couple of months as feedback from the field is incorporated into the upcoming 3.1 version.
Thanks Adam!
