DEX 3 Feature Spotlight | Automatic Karaoke Filler Music Player (Video)

The new DEX 3.10.0.2 (and up) DJ mixing software update is equipped with a karaoke filler music player that can automatically play regular music in between singers and sets, without using any of the main DEX 3 decks (players).  The video above will walk you through the new filler music player (aka background music player) features and how to use it properly.

This fresh addition to DEX 3 along with the recently added managed karaoke singer rotation list and singer/song history means DEX 3 users can host karaoke like a true professional. DEX 3.10.0.2 (and up) is the most versatile DJ mixing software for modern DJs that do much more than just mix music.

Ryan, I would just like to say I’m very impressed at what you and your team at PCDJ have accomplished in reviewing your latest updates 3.10 and up, wow, and more coming, wow again. I play music 20% and video 80% of the time and karaoke less than probably 1% I have few karaoke tracks but they just don’t work at these night clubs. I thank you very much for keeping Dex 3 intact as it has been for us Dj’s/Vj’s and creating a karaoke tab to turn it into an unbelievable karaoke machine with just a couple ticks, great job! Your team is taking it to next level and not destroying what was already great. Keep it up!! Dj Tam

Wow, Tammy! Thank so much for the kind words. It’s always nice to know your efforts are worth-while 🙂 We still have a lot on our ever growing, always evolving “to-do” list — but we’re moving things along at a nice pace as of lately.

      Again, much appreciated!

Just a couple of things with 3.10.0.2.

If you right click on the filler player play button whilst a karaoke song is playing it will start the crossfade of the filler player over the top of the karaoke song. It would be useful to have an option for the filler player to start the next filler song after each karaoke song rather than the current song where it left off.

Secondly when you load a singer and the karaoke song has not been played before, DEX has to scan the song for volume and start and end points so you end up with a few seconds of silence. It would be better if it either scanned the song when it is added to the waitlist or waits until it has scanned the song so fade out the filler player. Whilst on this point I have had a problem a few times where the singer starts singing before the music starts, in this case, DEX cues the song to where the music starts cutting out the singers first lines. I’m not sure if there is a solution to this though.

Thanks and keep up the good work

Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback! A “pause and load next track” option for the filler music player is something we’d like to add in the future. It has been discussed and placed on the to-do list already. You would not right-click the play button while hosting karaoke unless you did want a song to play overtop. You just click play at the start of the event, and it will play in between songs automatically – you right-click to mix to the next filler music track in your playlist.

You should and can pre-scan all your tracks ahead of time. Just batch import all your karaoke songs into the master database list, right click on any song in the list and select “analyze all” – and DEX 3 will calculate the BPM, key (if turned on in options), and waveform data (in/out cue points as well). So from that point forward when you load/play one of those songs they will load instantly into the deck. Also, volume will not jump/change (gain adjustment is applied immediately when you load a track to a player, so that volume never jumps when the songs is calculated on the fly). If you analyze all your songs ahead of time you won’t have to worry about any of this.

You CAN disable auto-cue in DEX 3’s options, that way it always starts at the true beginning of the file/track – and not when the music itself starts.

      Thanks again!
