System Optimization For PCDJ

The support department receives numerous tickets concerning software performance issue such as skipping, audio drop outs and other performance related issues. This is normally an indication of poor system performance and not a problem with PCDJ products.
We have decided to put a page together with links and other helpful information in order to help you prepare your machine for pro audio use and to trouble shoot performance issues

Unfortunately, when it comes to tuning your machine for pro audio software there is not a specific roadmap that we can provide for you. Every computer is different depending on hardware configuration, software installed, operating system type, sound card type and driver used, external devices connected when using PCDJ, etc. The combinations can be endless. The following are a couple of points to remember before we begin.

General Advice

Be sure that you meet RECOMMENDED system requirements, not minimum system requirements. Minimum system requirements are the bare minimum to simply run and demo the software in a non performance based environment. You should expect issues when using a machine meeting minimum system requirements when out at a gig.
On the flip side, just because you recently purchased the latest and greatest laptop with the fastest processor and most RAM you can find, doesn’t mean that it will perform well for PCDJ right off the shelf. it’s true that todays machines are faster than ever however manufacturers load them up at the factory with plenty of “bloatware” (unnecessary extra software) which is fine for general computing convenience but horrible for pro audio use. Be prepared to get into the control panel and uninstall anything not driver related in order to utilize that advanced hardware that you just paid good money to use at your shows.
We recommend a DEDICATED machine for PCDJ products. This means that the machine should not be used for email, internet browsing, word processing, etc. You should only have software installed related to PCDJ and Pro audio use. Antivirus / security software is one of the biggest culprits of stealing system resources and is not needed as this machine should only be on the internet for recommended PCDJ updates or others relating to your pro audio software. You should have a secondary machine for general computing operations.
IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT! Once you take the time to get everything running smoothly don’t mess up your system by performing unnecessary updates from Microsoft (windows updates) or hardware driver updates unless they are absolutely needed. Microsoft has a nasty habit of releasing security patches without notifying the third party software community. This has caused customers showing up to a gig with software which has become “locked” or other issues because the update has corrupted registration information in hidden areas of the operating system. Adhering to this advice will assure you piece of mind knowing that every time you show up to a performance that you machine and software will boot up with no issues.

ASIO Driver Advice

ASIO is a low latency third party driver implemented by many of todays pro audio sound card manufacturers. Many multi channel sound cards require you to install this driver in order to access the extra channels with in PCDJ products. You may see a single channel WDM (windows driver model aka direct sound) output available in the control panel but you need to use ASIO to utilize multiple outs. ASIO allows for a lower latency response between the time you press play and actually hear the sound, however it is extremely sensitive to how well your machine is running. Common issues include “Clicks and Pops” or complete dropouts altogether. Try to remember that ASIO is like an old analog radio dial and you should adjust the buffer setting in the driver control panel to see if you obtain a better response. Try a starting setting of 512 mb (11 ms) and increase or decrease buffer settings to see if you rid the system of clicks and pops. Too High or Low of a buffer will cause audio distortion. If changing the buffer settings does not help to improve the audio quality the you should start investigating system performance issues as will be explained below. Here are some things to keep in mind when using ASIO or external sound cards in general:

Always connect a USB sound card to the same USB port every time. before installing you should look at the available ports on the machine and decide which one will be the best functional port on the machine. DO NOT CONNECT

Uniloc Offline Activation Instructions

Note: You will need a USB thumb drive or some other removable media to perform this easily! Please have this connected to your machine before you begin!

Step 1

Click on the second option: “I want to generate a request to activate this computer which i will upload via a browser from this or another computer”

Step 2

Enter your license code in the box making sure to use all upper case and omit any dashes. Click “SAVE”.

Step 3

In the browser window that opens save the ACTIVATIONREQUEST.TXT file to your thumb drive or any other removable media.

Step 4

Remove the drive and insert into any machine that has internet and go to this page http://offlineactivation.softanchorinsight.com/fileactivate.aspx?publisher=pcdj

Step 5

Click BROWSE

Step 6

In the browser window that opens browse to the removable drive and select the ACTIVATIONREQUEST.TXT file and click OPEN. Click UPLOAD in your internet browser to upload the file.

Step 7

The server will generate a RESPONSE.TXT file. Click SAVE.

Step 8

In the browser window that opens save the RESPONSE.TXT file to your removable drive. After saving remove the drive from this machine and return it to the offline machine

Step 9

Click on “Click here to install the response”

Step 10

In the browser window that opens browse to the removable drive and select the RESPONSE.TXT file and click OPEN.

Step 11

After successful activation click “Play Now” to open your software

- The software is distributed “as-is” and no warranty of any kind is expressed.

- Digital 1 Audio (DBA Digital 1 DJ) and its suppliers retain all intellectual property rights in the software.

- There are no refunds issued on activated software.

1. PERMITTED USE AND RESTRICTIONS

You are granted one license to:

- install and use the Software on one computer.

- rent, lease, sell, lend, distribute, publish, bundle or sublicense the Software or any part of it.

3. COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

Unauthorized copying, distribution, modification, public display, or public performance of copyrighted works is an infringement of the copyright holders’ rights. As a condition to your agreement with Digital 1 Audio (DBA D1DJ), you agree that you will not use the Software to infringe the intellectual property rights of others in any way.

4. WARRANTY

Digital 1 Audio (DBA D1DJ) warrants that the media on which the Software is furnished, if any, will be free from defects in materials and workmanship.

Digital 1 Audio (DBA D1DJ) offers no warranty of performance, express or implied, with regard to the licensed software and all accompanying materials. Digital 1 Audio (DBA D1DJ) further disclaims all other warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, with regard to the licensed software and all accompanying materials.

5. CUSTOMER REMEDY

Your exclusive remedy under the above limited warranty shall be, at Digital 1 Audio (DBA D1DJ) option, either a full refund of the purchase price or correction of the defective software or media. Notice is hereby given however, that absent any defects, there will be no refunds issued on activated software

6. DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES

You assume responsibility for, among other things, (i) the selection of the Licensed Software to achieve your intended results, (ii) the acquisition of other software (including any programming or operating system software) and/or equipment compatible with the Licensed Software, and (iii) the installation, use and results obtained from the Licensed Software. American Audio DP2 Setup In DEX / Red Mobile

Midi Configuration

To use the DP2’s controls, you have to activate it in the DEX configuration. To do this, open the options window, and select the General tab.
There, activate the Midi checkbox, and right-click the ‘Config’ button next to it.

Now select the DP-2 from the list, and select the aa_dp2.xml configuration from the drop-down box.
Finally, click ‘Connect’ to connect the device.

Sound Configuration

You must install the DP 2 Asio driver which is included on the install disc that is packaged with the DP2 in order to utilize the multi out’s on the DP2.
Settings for Using an external hardware Mixer:

You will connect to your external mixer using the RCA connectors on the back of the DP2.
If you are going to use the DP 2 built in mixer and want to connect headphones to the headphone jack then use this configuration:

You will connect the master out / Player 1 RCA jack to your main speaker Amp and connect the headphones to the 1/4″ Jack under Player 2.

General Use

Use the play/pause button to start or pause a track.
When the track is playing, the cue button will stop the track and return to the current cue point.
When the track is paused, pressing cue will set the cue point to the current position, or starts playing the song while the cue button is pressed.
Press pause while cue is pressed to continue playing even when cue is released.
The crossfader and volume sliders will adjust the volume as expected.
The low, and high knobs control the low and high frequency equalizer.
Use the pitch slider to adjust the pitch of each deck. Note that this slider works relative to the current pitch.
This means that you can use djDecks’ auto beat match function, and then adjust the pitch slightly with the pitch slider if necessary.
The Master button will adjust the pitch to match the other decks’ bpm.
Holding the button for more than a second and then releasing it will reset the pitch to 0%.
The Scratch and Jog Seek buttons switch between different jog wheel modes.
When both are disabled, the jog wheel can be used for pitch bending, when scratch is enabled it can be used for scratching, and when jog seek is enabled, it can be used to rapidly search through the song.
The Master Volume knob will control the master volume.
The Cue Vol knob will control the cue volume.
The CUE PGM knob controls the amount of the master output that is sent to the monitor output.
The Cue button above the jog wheel toggles that output to be sent to the monitor output.

Cue Points

To load a previously saved cue point, press 1 of the 4 hot cue buttons.
To store a cue point, hold the Shift button and press one of the four hot cue buttons to store it to that location.

Loops

The Loop In button will set the start point of a loop, when the Loop Out button is pressed a loop will be activated.
When a loop is active, the Loop Out button can be used to exit the loop.
The Reloop button will re-activate the previous loop and start playing it from the beginning of the loop.
The Loop - and Loop + buttons will halve or double the length of the current loop.

Effects

An effect can be selected with the effect select knob. To enable an effect, use the effect on/off button (reverse button?) which will also show the state of the effect.
Effect 1: Flanger. The strength of the effect can be set with the X Parameter knob. The length of the effect can be set with the Y parameter.
Press the Y parameter button to hold the effect from flanging, and press again to continue the flanger movement
Effect 2: Echo. The X parameter knob controls the strength of the echo, the Y parameter controls the length of the echo
The effect on/off parameter toggles source and echo parameters, creating a short echo effect, but with the song still continuing to play.
Effect 3: Filter. Use effect on/off button to enable the effect.
When using the X parameter knob from center to left, it will first cut the high frequency sounds, then the low frequency sounds. When using it from center to right, it will first cut the low frequencies.
With the Y parameter you can specify the feedback. Moving this knob more to the left will make the effect sound stronger.
Effect 4: Bitcrusher. The first knob controls the downsampling, with the effect increasing from left to right.
The second knob controls the bit-depth, with the effect increasing from right to left.
Effect 8: Reverse. Use the effect on/off button to enable reverse play

Sampler (DEX Only)

First create a loop, then use Save To to activate saving a sample, and then press the sample number to store the sample.
To play a previously stored sample, press the sample button.
With the sampler button you can open the sampler window to load other files into the sampler, store a set of samples or load a previously stored set of samples.

Playlist

Use the Track Select buttons to select a song in the playlist.
Press Track Select to select a different list to scroll in (folders, files or playlist)
Press the To Deck 1 or To Deck 2 button to load a song to a deck, or to open a selected folder.
